Yet another cyberattack is making headlines this week. To the dismay of all Canadians, our “beloved” Canadian Revenue Agency has fallen victim to hackers. Unfortunately, thousands of loyal taxpaying citizens have been impacted. Experts have identified three separate hacks and warned of a credential stuffing scheme. Basically, this type of cyberattack targets people who use the same passwords and log on credentials across multiple accounts. Sound familiar?

In a truly Canadian response to the attack, our government has mailed letters to account holders who may have been affected. We highly recommend you act now instead of waiting for a snail mail notification. Protect yourself in 10 easy steps:

  1. Change your password and use a strong password unique to your CRA account

  2. Consider using a Password Manager to help you create and manage all of your accounts

  3. Avoid using the same login credentials and passwords on multiple accounts

  4. Implement two-factor authentication (when available)

  5. Be on guard for scammers – learn how to recognize phishing

  6. Review privacy and security settings – especially on your social media and email accounts

  7. Keep your devices updated – vendors regularly issue security patches

  8. Use anti-virus and anti-malware software and keep it up to date

  9. Back up your data

  10. Think Cyber Security

Still feeling nervous? We are happy to schedule a remote support call to review your accounts and security settings.
