October: The Month of Pumpkin Spice, Autumn Leaves, and... Cyber Security?

Writer's picture: RW NetworksRW Networks

Ah, October – the time when the leaves turn a mosaic of reds and oranges, pumpkin spice lattes become the unofficial drink of the season, and everyone's gearing up for a spook-tacular Halloween. But there's another, less celebrated tradition that's creeping into the limelight: Cyber Security Awareness Month! Cyber Month is an internationally recognized campaign held each October to help the public learn more about the importance of cyber security.

That's right, folks. While you're carving pumpkins and stocking up on candy, hackers are sharpening their keyboards, ready to trick you for a treat. So, let's turn the tables and have a laugh while we learn how to keep those digital ghouls at bay.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, let's talk about passwords! We all know 'password123' is not going to cut it unless you're trying to make a hacker's day. It's like leaving your front door open with a sign that says "Free Candy Inside." Instead, think of a password like a toothbrush – choose wisely, don't share it, and change it every few months. And for heaven's sake, don't use the same toothbrush for every website!

Now, onto phishing – not the kind with a rod and reel, but the kind that reels in your personal info. These sneaky emails and messages look like they're from legit companies, but they actually originate from con artists in disguise. Remember, no reputable company will ask for your password or credit card number via email. If they do, it's a trick! Treat it with suspicion.

And let's not forget about those software updates. Yes, they can be as annoying as that one house that gives out toothbrushes instead of candy on Halloween. But just like brushing, they're necessary for good hygiene – cyber hygiene, that is. Those updates patch up security holes faster than you can say "Boo!"

Feeling overwhelmed? Simply remember to SCRUB - secure, curate, review, update and block!

  • secure your accounts and devices with strong passphrases and multi factor authentication

  • curate your content by managing the information you receive, share and are connected to online

  • review your resources and stay in the know with the latest cyber security best practices

  • update your software and systems frequently by enabling automatic updates where possible

  • block cyber threats by deleting contacts you don't know and blocking spam and phishing messages

So, as you enjoy the fall festivities, keep your wits about you. Cyber security might not be as fun as a haunted hayride, but it's crucial for keeping the real-life monsters out of your virtual attic. Stay safe, stay secure, and let's ensure the only thing scary about October is the costumes.

Happy Cyber Security Awareness Month, everyone! May your Wi-Fi be strong, your passwords be complex, and your online shopping carts be full of discounted Halloween candy come November 1st. 🎃🔒💻
