Did you know it’s Screen-Free Week? Presented by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, Screen-Free Week is an annual, international celebration of life beyond the screen. How ironic that we of all people would be championing a screen-free mandate! Those closest to us know, that while we wholeheartedly support technology, gadgets and all the innovative wonders of today’s world, we also are passionate “unpluggers!” Perhaps our interpretation of work-life balance, but we digress.
On average, preschool children spend over four and a half hours a day consuming screen media, while older children spend over seven hours a day including multitasking. Those numbers are staggering! Excessive screen time is linked to a number of problems for children, including childhood obesity, poor school performance, and attention span issues. By participating in Screen-Free week we can encourage the children in our communities to read, play, think, create, be more physically active, and to spend more time with friends and family. Seems like a great idea to us!
