Register your home, mobile or VoIP number on Canada’s National Do Not Call List. Registration is free and becomes effective 31 days after you signup. Visit them online to register your number.

Consider a third-party Call Blocker app. From Truecaller to Hiya, Both Google Play and the Apple App Store have a wide variety of call blocking apps available to safeguard you against telemarketers, robo-callers and spammers.

You can also block numbers on either your iPhone or Android smartphone. The steps for blocking numbers on an Android phone vary based on the device and operating system version. Open the Phone app and select recent calls or call history. Tap the number you want to block and find the command that says block and/or report as spam. Confirm the request to block the number.

Even with these tools in place, it is doubtful that you’ll avoid all robocalls and spam calls, but hopefully you will notice a significant decrease in unwanted calls. Should a call slip through, do not engage. Your best course of action is to leave the caller unsure whether or not they have connected with a living, breathing human. Don’t say anything and don't push buttons. Simply let the call go through to your voicemail or hang up immediately. After all - silence is golden.
