Put down those jack-o-lanterns and finish up that pumpkin spice latte, it’s time to chat about Cyber Security. October is officially Cyber Security Awareness Month in Canada and there is no time like the present to focus on digital security.
Paying attention to online security can make your life easier both online and offline. Check out these 3 quick tips on how to better protect yourself:
1. Strengthen Your Passwords
You have heard it before and we guarantee you will hear it again! Having a strong password is one of the most important ways to enhance cyber security
Use unique passwords or passphrases and include letters, numbers and special characters
Use a secure password manager
Never share your passwords
2. Implement Two-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Did you know 99.9% of cyber attacks are thwarted by two-factor authentication?
Multi-Factor Authentication can be via SMS (a security code sent by text message), biometrics like a finger print or by utilizing an authentication app
3. Be Aware of SPAM
Watch for emails that contain spelling or grammar errors, unprofessional graphics or use urgent or threatening language
Be aware of requests for sensitive information
Last, but not least, remember Microsoft and Apple Support will not initiate a call to you! Cyber criminals are savvy, it’s our job to outwit them! Prevention is key.
